Family tax traps are not only tax problems. They affect nursery bills, Child Benefit, work decisions, pension contributions and household cashflow.
This page does not duplicate the Child Benefit calculator. It explains the order: adjusted net income first, threshold second, calculator third.

The control number is adjusted net income
- Adjusted net income includes taxable income such as pay, benefits, savings interest and dividends, then deducts certain reliefs such as pension contributions and Gift Aid.
- For Child Benefit, the higher-income partner is the one tested. A household with two GBP 59,000 earners can be outside the charge while a household with one GBP 61,000 earner can be inside it.
- For Tax-Free Childcare and Free Childcare for Working Parents, the GBP 100,000 rule is an individual adjusted net income test.
Child Benefit charge route
| Income band | What happens from 2024/25 onwards | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| At or below GBP 60,000 | No High Income Child Benefit Charge based on that person income. | Still claim if eligible, especially for National Insurance credits. |
| GBP 60,001 to GBP 79,999 | Charge gradually claws back Child Benefit. | Use the HICBC calculator and check pension/Gift Aid timing. |
| GBP 80,000 or more | Charge can claw back all Child Benefit. | Decide whether to keep payments and repay or opt out of payments while preserving claim status. |
The GBP 100,000 childcare cliff
- Tax-Free Childcare and Free Childcare for Working Parents can be lost if either partner expected adjusted net income is over GBP 100,000.
- This means a bonus or pay rise can affect childcare support even before you think about the Personal Allowance taper.
- Before accepting or timing bonus income, test pay, pension, adjusted net income and childcare eligibility together.
The UKTAXDRAG rule
Identify the threshold first, then use the calculator. Hidden tax drag usually comes from stacking effects, not from one visible headline rate.
